Composer's Story

'Composers' is located on the edge of Scremerston, once a small and vibrant village. When the local colliery closed in the 1950's the village declined in importance and many residents moved away to seek new employment.

The A1 which had passed through Scremerston, was re-routed in 1983, and the busy road through the village became quiet again, only giving access to the local Cocklawburn Beach and returning the area to peace and tranquillity.  It's a peaceful way of life we still enjoy today, years on.

In September 2004 'Woodlands' was purchased by the previous owners.  The original bungalow was surrounded by old colliery outbuildings, which had been store rooms during the time of the colliery yard and later became a garage, servicing local cars and farm vehicles. Over the next 12 months, planning permission was obtained to build our holiday properties.

Finally, with planning approved, in November 2005 the old outbuildings were removed, new foundations were laid and the build of the new holiday properties, office and reception started. With the work completed on schedule 'Composers at Woodlands' was opened on 15th April 2006.

In November 2022, the previous owners, passed over the reigns of Composers at Woodlands to The Michael Edward Anderson Trust.

Michael's daughter Holly, her husband Thomas, and their border collie dog Rue, soon moved up to Scremerston to take the reins and now run the business on Michael's behalf with Michael popping by every now and again.

Why are we called 'Composers at Woodlands'?

The previous owners had a background in the music and entertainment industry and soon found a way to give the holiday properties a unique identity. The original interior design for the cottages were all inspired by English, American, Italian and Russian composers - Elgar, Bernstein, Vivaldi and Chopin. Although these have since been redecorated (and red gloss kitchen removed) the names remain.

At the heart of 'Composers' is our continuing wish to create something unique and very special for guests. We offer self catering cottages in Northumberland in a holiday destination where visitors quickly feel at ease be it for a short break or longer holiday.
